Gardens in the Sky: The Bluegrass Gospel of James King (Rounder Records)
Released 2008

NOW AVAILABLE!!!

James King is considered among the leading voices in traditional bluegrass, summoning timeless echoes of Appalachia with a voice that is equal parts urgent, yearning, and tender. For that reason, this project - his first entirely gospel collection - has been eagerly awaited by his public, whose frequent requests for such an album inspired its release. King's interpretations of bluegrass gospel classics both vintage and modern are so uniquely suited to the powerful longing and commitment that underpins every note he sings. Gardens in the Sky combines favorites from the James King catalog with performances featured on albums by Paul Williams and Longview, King's contributions to The Stanley Gospel Tradition CD, and six previously unreleased recordings.

The Bluegrass Storyteller (Rounder Records)
Released 2005
James King has been regarded as one of the finest singers of hard mountain bluegrass since he burst onto the scene over a decade ago. On The Bluegrass Storyteller he delivers his trademarks of soaring vocal power and honest emotion while focusing on the nuances of storytelling - character, irony, humor, suspense. With classic songs from the likes of Tom T. Hall and Lefty Frizzell, great new songs from contemporary writers like David Olney and Fred Eaglesmith, and some timeless bluegrass and gospel, this album earns King the crown of The Bluegrass Storyteller.

Thirty Years of Farming (Rounder Records)
Released 2002
James King may be the greatest mountain soul singer of his generation, bringing a deep understanding of the hardcore bluegrass tradition to his hard-driving blend of bluegrass and honky-tonk country music. Thirty Years of Farming, which features King s touring band, is a fresh collection of overlooked treasures and classics-to-be, each infused with the raw emotion that has come to be his trademark. Here is one of the most exciting sounds in bluegrass today.

Bed By The Window (Rounder Records)
Released 1998
"In an age where much bluegrass and country music is a product of stacked harmonies and polite, well-mannered vocals, James King is a rarity: an honest-to-God mountain soul singer who likes it loud and hard, who's not afraid of emotion and sentiment. James King has carried his heart songs to festivals all over the country, and won his share of rave reviews and industry awards. Here he continues to ply his hardcore bluegrass style to a rich and surprising collection of songs, accompanied by his crack road band. Like generations of Virginia singers before him, he does best what great singers have always done: he finds a good song, and he tells a good story. Even Carter Stanley could not have asked for more." --Charles Wolfe, from his liner notes

Lonesome and Then Some (Rounder Records)
Released 1995
Bluegrass Unlimited called These Old Pictures, James King's Rounder debut, ". . . the breakthrough album of the year. . . ." by ". . . the most impressive lead vocalist to emerge in traditional bluegrass so far this decade." King sings straight from the heart with a weary note that says: I've been there. Like every great country singer from Jimmie Rodgers on down, James King believes what he sings and that makes all the difference. He's the real deal, the kind of singer that makes bluegrass what it so gloriously is. And if it takes a worried man to sing a worried song, what must it take to sing a lonesome song? It's simple: James King knows lonesome. And then some. --adapted from the liner notes by Jon Hartley Fox

These Old Pictures (Rounder Records)
Released 1993
James King grew up in Carroll County, Virginia, the center of the old-time music universe, which may be why someone as young as King (born in 1958) can sound like a member of the original generation of bluegrass musicians. He worked with Ralph Stanley as guest vocalist in the late '80s, and before that worked regularly with Ted Lundy's brothers Bobby and T.J. James King's soulful voice balances the emotional gut-wrenching mountain blues of old-time music and the smoother drive of early bluegrass. This album was recorded in 1993 with members of the Johnson Mountain Boys.

Longview: Deep in the Mountains (Rounder Records)
Released 2008
Longview

NOW AVAILABLE!!!

"In every lick and harmony, these guys take the long view of the music they love, from its traditional roots in the southern mountains, to the first classic ensembles of Bill Monroe, Jim & Jesse, and the Stanley Brothers, to the newgrass revolution ignited by Crowe's band, The New South." - from the liner notes by Scott Alarik

Six years have passed since the last recording from bluegrass supergroup Longview, and Deep in the Mountains marks their much-anticipated return. Original members James King, Don Rigsby, and Marshall Wilborn are now joined by J.D. Crowe, Ron Stewart, and Lou Reid, resulting in a potent new lineup with the chops, discipline, and heart required to make the bluegrass tradition come alive. From the first note to the last, Deep in the Mountains is a striking update of the band's long-held goal: soulful old-school bluegrass with soaring lead singing and riveting three-part harmonies.

Longview: Lessons in Stone (Rebel Records)
Released 2002
Getting 6 successful, busy Blugrass Stars together can be next to impossible. But, Happilh, the obstacles were overcome, the result being another record of some of the sharpest, tightest, hard-core traditional Bluegrass to be heard today (or any day). There are several factors which make this band so noteworthy, starting with the fact that it includes three of the best lead singers in Bluegrass today: Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby and James King. Instrumentally they are just as impressive, with Glen Duncan on fiddle, Joe Mullins on banjo, Rigsby on mandolin and Marshall Wilbourn on bass--all veterans with impeccable Bluegrass credentials. Almost equal in importance is the group’s ability to find obscure but wonderful songs that lend themselves perfectly to the bands’ talents. Pieces like Jimmy Martin’s ACROSS THE SEA BLUES, Carl Story’s I HEARD MY MOTHER WEEPING, and two old Country Gentlemen numbers (THE HILLS & HOME and YOU LEFT ME ALONE) are hammered out with the skill and power that can make the hair stand up on your neck. While every cut is a gem, pay special attention to the wonderful title song, written by Tom T. Hall, and the high-baritone trio treatment of FADED RED RIBBON, with James King leading. Great, great stuff! If you have the chance to see this band at one of its few special personal appearances, don’t miss it! Whether or not you get to see them, don’t miss this fantastic recording! A FEW MORE YEARS, NEVER GET TO HOLD YOU IN MY ARMS ANYMORE, WHEN THE GOLDEN LEAVES BEGIN TO FALL, etc.

Longview: High Lonesome (Rounder Records)
Released 1999
High Lonesome, the long-awaited sophomore album by bluegrass "super-group" Longview, brings to light some undeservedly obscure songs from the genre's adolescence. With an abundance of musical riches at its command, from the forceful lead vocals of Dudley Connell, James King and Don Rigsby to the right-hand punch of Joe Mullins' banjo, Glen Duncan's masterful twin fiddling and Marshall Wilborn's supportive bass, the band's homage to the sounds and spirits of 1950s and 1960s bluegrass captures the exhilaration and emotion of the originals, telling us through its power why so many people speak of their "conversion" to bluegrass.

Longview (Rounder Records)
Released 1997
"Longview brings together for the first time Dudley Connell, Glen Duncan, James King, Joe Mullins, Don Rigsby and Marshall Wilborn -- six musicians who have already individually made important contributions to bluegrass music -- in a mutual celebration of the creative and innovative spirit of the original masters who created the bluegrass style in the 1940s and 1950s. Here you'll find blues-tinged lead vocals, hair-raising duets, driving instrumental leads, inventive back-up work and simply some of the best (not to mention highest) trio singing ever recorded. Built upon the foundation of an irresistible right-in-the-pocket rhythm section that allows each musician to bring forth performances of an unparalleled emotional depth, Longview will make you realize once again what bluegrass is really all about." --Bill Evans, from his liner notes
